Apple could get $6 to $8 for every smartphone HTC sells

A new 10 year patent licensing deal came in effect two days ago between Apple and HTC. However details on what the benefits for either side might be weren't given at the time.

Shaw Wu, analyst at Sterne Agee, reckons Apple could be generating between $6 and $8 per sold HTC smartphone, which when put together with the shipment estimate of 30 to 35 million HTC devices in 2013 could mean anywhere between $180 and $280 million going Apple's way.

An unnamed Wall Street Journal source has collaborated that HTC will indeed be paying Apple undisclosed licensing fees, making the $6 to $8 per device estimate all the more believable.

Shaw Wu hypothesizes that Apple could use the HTC deal as a template, with which to approach other companies it has active patent litigation wars with, such as Samsung and Motorola.

Of course, analysts are often off-target and this could all turn out incorrect or false altogether, so take it with a pinch of salt.

Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 go on sale, immediately run out of stock

It looks like people know a deal when they see one, as the new Google flagship smartphone, the Nexus 4, has sold out in less than an hour after appearing on the Play Store in the UK and Australia. The same applies to the 10 inch Nexus tablet - both 32 and 16 GB variants.

We're still waiting for the imminent launch of the devices on Google Play for the US, where we expect to see a similar picture. The Google Nexus 4 is expected to drastically impact the smartphone market with its impressive specs sheet and super aggressive pricing.

Update: Sure enough, the Nexus 4 stock in the US was depleted 24 minutes after it went on sale. We are yet to get some actually numbers from Google and see if it was a matter of low stock or simply unprecedented demand.

The Nexus 4 features a 4.7 inch True HD IPS Plus display of 768 x 1280 pixels resolution, a quad-core 1.5 Ghz Krait processor, 8/16 GB of storage, 2 GB of RAM, an 8MP shooter capable of 1080p video, powered by a 2100 mAh battery ? all of this priced at $299/$349 without contract.

You might find yourself doing some frantic refreshes of the Play Store in the coming weeks to see when it will be up for sale (again) in your area, and frankly, we don't blame you.

HTC DROID DNA gets revealed before its announcement

In a manner, which has shaped up to be quite fashionable lately, the previously leaked HTC DROID DNA for Verizon Wireless got revealed only a couple of days before its official announcement is scheduled to take place. The DROID DNA name has been confirmed on Verizon?s own DROID DOES webpage, while press renders of the photo have made an appearance in Twitter.

The leaked press photos reveal yet again that the upcoming Verizon DROID looks similar to the Japan exclusive HTC J butterfly, save for the Verizon livery on its black body with red accents . The same goes for the specs which will include a 5? full HD display, quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset, and 2GB of RAM.

HTC?s Android powerhouse with 1080p display for Verizon is scheduled to be announced this coming Tuesday, on November 13, at an event in New York City. We will be covering the unveiling live, so be sure to stick around for the full scoop on the device, including hands-on photos and initial impressions.

BlackBerry 10 will launch on Jan 30 next year with two new phones

After getting delayed, RIM's BlackBerry 10 platform finally has a launch date set. On January 30, RIM will hold multiple events across the world simultaneously where it will launch both the OS and the first the BlackBerry phones to use it.

The BB 10 OS will hit the ground running - it will launch with "a large catalog of the leading applications from across the globe and across all categories" and a FIPS 140-2 certification (which means that government agencies can switch to BB 10 right away and count on security). You can read more about FIPS 140-2 over here.

During the event, RIM will give details on the two launch phones and their availability. We've most likely seen them already - the touchscreen operated L-series and the more traditional QWERTY-packing N-Series. Then there's the rumored BlackBerry 10 Aristo device with a quad-core Krait and a 4.65" AMOLED 720p display.

RIM's press release didn?t say anything about the first two BlackBerry 10 phones, so the Aristo remains in the rumor mill for now, but the company did say that the phones are being tested by 50 carriers (with more on the way), pointing to a wide launch.

Android and Samsung build on their market shares in Q3 2012

Android's market share increased significantly during the third quarter of 2012, with the Google OS powering 72.4% of all smartphones sold in the three months' period. Apple's iOS came a very distant second with a market share of 13.9%.

This is an impressive accomplishment for Google's mobile OS, considering Android's market share was 52.5% in Q3 of 2011.

Samsung saw its position as the leading mobile manufacturer increase to 22.9% after selling almost 100 million phones in the three month period ending in September. This was mostly at the expense of Nokia, which saw its market share slide almost 5 percent points year-over-year.

The holiday season should see Apple take back some of both of those pies, as many iOS-faithfuls held off on replacing their smartphones until the iPhone 5 came around. Apple's new smartphone top dog is expanding its availability to many new markets in Q4, which should help Apple arrest the fall in iOS market share.

T-Mobile releases Jelly Bean for the Galaxy S III

T-Mobile is the second US carrier to unleash Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to its Galaxy S III customers. Last month Sprint started seeding the Jelly Bean update to the Galaxy S III units on its network.

The update is available OTA or from Samsung's Kies software. Users who are rooted and don't want to wait can download the update from here and then manually flash it on their devices.

The Galaxy S III will receive Project Butter for a smoother, more fluid UI performance, the improved notifications, "freestyle widgets" that automatically reorder your homescreen content before they are placed and more.

Here's a video by Samsung showcasing the various improvements. Below it is a video dedicated to the improvements and novelties in TouchWiz itself.

Now with T-Mobile on the bandwagon it seems AT&T and Verizon are lagging behind, something their customers are very vocal about in their respectful forums.

Samsung I930 ATIV Odyssey for Verizon image leaked

We reported couple of weeks ago about an upcoming Windows Phone 8 device for Verizon's network in the US. Called the Samsung ATIV Odyssey the device seemed like a variant of the ATIV S for Verizon's network.

We now have an image of the device, courtesy of @evleaks on Twitter. The phone looks like the original Samsung Focus from the front and the ATIV S from the back. But somehow, it does not strike us as a high-end device, with the display size seemingly around the 4-inch mark.

Other than the 4G LTE badge on the back and the microSD card slot on the side, we are not sure of any other spec of the device, so we will have to wait till we hear more about this one.

HTC One X+ and One VX will hit AT&T on November 16

Right after it spilled the beans on the Samsung Galaxy Camera, AT&T announced pricing and retail availability of the HTC One X+ and One VX. The duo of LTE smartphones will be available on November 16, priced at $199.99 for the HTC One X+, and $49.99 for its entry-level sibling.

The HTC One X+ surely has its work cut out ? the device will enter the most competitive segment in the US smartphone market. With quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3, 64GB of built-in memory, and Sense-d Android 4.1 Jelly Bean though, the One X+ makes for an attractive smartphone proposition.

The HTC One VX on the other hand, looks like a solid offering as an entry-level device ? it features a 4.5? display and dual-core Snapdragon S4 chipset, tucked into a solidly built body.

In a typical AT&T fashion, the pricing and availability announcement came accompanied by a promo video. See it below.

You can check out our initial impressions from both devices over here.

Nokia rebrands mapping service to Nokia HERE

In a San Francisco event, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop announced that the company will be rebranding their mapping service and will be calling it Nokia HERE. While the service will mostly remain the same, Nokia has added some cool new features.

First is a feature called Collections, which lets you save locations to your Nokia account so you can quickly jump to them without having to search for them every time. The locations sync across devices after you log into your Nokia account. Collections is similar to the starring feature in Google Maps.

Another new feature is 3D maps, where you get a 3D view of several key locations around the world. This feature is identical to the Flyover feature in the new Apple Maps and the data is actually provided by the same company, C3 Technologies.

Nokia has also added a maps editor, so users can now update street names and traffic information and the information will be added to the maps for others to see.

Nokia also acquired street view mapping company Earthmine, which brings street view functionality to Nokia's maps.

Now here's the best part. Nokia will be bringing their HERE maps to iOS and Android as well. The iOS and Android apps will be released soon and Nokia will also be providing the maps SDK to Android OEMs so they can integrate it within their apps. The iOS version includes turn by turn directions and public transportation information and is currently pending Apple's approval. A web version for Mozilla's upcoming Firefox OS will be released next year.

You can also check out Nokia HERE on your web browser by clicking, well, HERE.

Sony offers 24K gold-plated Xperia P as contest prize

We haven't seen any gold phones in a while, but we didn?t expect Sony to be the one to fill that void. Sony ran a contest on its Facebook page over the weekend with the prize being a 24 karat gold-pated Sony Xperia P.

The contest is for Nordic countries only and will be over in a couple of hours. If you want to participate, you have to send an email to fans.se@sonymobile.com answering the question "What is a gold Friday for you?" (this is an automatic translating so it may not be 100% accurate, but we're sure people in Nordic countries don't need Google Translate).

Sony Xperia P Limited 24K Gold Edition

The Xperia P launched early this year and one of its major attractions was the aluminum unibody. The Limited 24K Gold Edition will go to a lucky winner today and they might be the only ones to have it.

Sony's Facebook page makes no mention of this limited edition going on sale. And even if it did, did anyone buy those gold-plated Nokias? Sure, this has the advantage of running Android rather than Symbian - or worse still - S40, which puts it head to head with the Lamborghini TL700 and the Mobiado Grand Touch.

Anyway, the winner of the Sony Xperia P Limited 24K Gold Edition (who is yet to be announced) has our congratulations.

T-Mobile to sell unsubsidized 16GB Nexus 4 for $499 in US

T-Mobile has announced that they would be selling the 16GB Nexus 4 for $499 in the US, unsubsidized. That's rather high, as the phone costs only $349 on Google Play.

The other option they offer you is the ability to purchase the phone for $199 but with a two-year contract, so any money saved on the phone's purchase will be spent through the monthly bills and you will certainly end up paying more than $349.

It seems purchasing the phone through Google Play is still the best option. Unfortunately, the phone quickly went out of stock on Google's store, so if you want it urgently for some reason, T-Mobile would be your only choice.

Fortunately, as The Verge reports, the handsets sold by T-Mobile are identical to the ones sold directly by Google, which means they have no carrier bloatware and will get updates at the same time.

HTC DROID DNA with 1080p screen, quad-core Krait debuts

Just as expected the HTC event in New York was all about the DROID DNA for Verizon. The long-rumored beast of a smartphone finally went official.

The DROID DNA offers a specs sheet similar to its Japanese sibling ? the HTC J Butterfly. It features the first of its kind 5-inch 1080p S-LCD3 display and is powered by the Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset with a 1.5GHz quad-core Krait processor, Adreno 320 graphics and 2GB of RAM.

The rest of the specs include an 8MP rear camera with LED flash and 1080p video recording, a 2MP front snapper, LTE, Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0, Beats Audio and 16GB non-expandable internal memory. The DROID DNA is capable of wireless charging, while the battery capacity is 2020 mAh.

The DROID DNA runs on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean accompanied by the HTC Sense 4+ UI - a combo we already met with the One X+. It will hit the Verizon?s stores on November 21 for $200, with pre-orders starting today.

There is nothing official on the international model yet, but we guess it should get announced at the upcoming CES or MWC at the latest.

Android 4.2 update now rolling out for the GSM Galaxy Nexus

Right on the day of the Nexus 4 launch, Google has started rolling out the Android 4.2 update for the Galaxy Nexus.

Currently, only a few users have reported receiving the update, and none of them are using the Sprint or Verizon versions. If you have the GSM variant, preferably the "takju" variant you are most likely to receive the update.

Post update you will be treated to all the new 4.2 features, including Photo Sphere mode, Gesture Typing, multi-user mode, notification settings, Daydream, Miracast sharing, improved Google now and other performance and stability updates.

Eventually we believe the update will be rolled out to all the users but if you're impatient, you can download the update by following this link to Android Police. Just make sure you read the instructions carefully.

HTC details Jelly Bean update, 512MB RAM phones not invited

HTC finally shed some light on the Jelly Bean update roll-out and compatibility. Unfortunately there are several devices that won?t get the Android 4.1 treatment and will be stuck on Ice Cream Sandwich forever.

According to HTC devices with 512MB RAM or less are incompatible with Jelly Bean and won?t be updated. Just like Sony said a while ago, HTC believes the Ice Cream Sandwich provides better user experience than Jelly Bean. This means the One V and Desire C are out of the loop already.

They won't be the only ones either. HTC is prioritizing the Jelly Bean development on devices released within 2012. When it's done with them, the company will consider releasing Jelly Bean for some of its 2011 phones. Not to be but it is highly unlikely.

There is still no info on when the first global Jelly Bean updates will come, but the roll out for the One X and One S has already started, so we guess the others shouldn't be that far either.

Apple iPad 4 review: Marching on

GSMArena team, 14 November 2012.

Three Apple tablets in a single year. This is more than anyone asked for and yet, by some weird logic - or lack thereof, not too many for Apple to successfully sell. All fine and dandy, unless you got the iPad 3 - better luck next time if you were unfortunate enough to buy it in September.

Well, so much for the new iPad. Number 4 is the new new iPad. You must've heard the one about the double positives. Did we hear some iPad 3 owners say "Yeah, right"? To be honest, they're not without a point.

Apple iPad 4 Apple iPad 4 Apple iPad 4
Apple iPad 4 official photos

Anyway, the tablet market is still Apple's to lose and the least it could do is send a message to the competition. The double November release may look like a knee-jerk reaction to Google and Microsoft's raid on the slate market but the fact is that Apple has the depth to compete on two fronts. The mini against compact droids and the iPad 4 against the Surface means Cupertino is leaving nothing to chance in defending its number one spot.

The fourth generation iPad is no major upgrade. It keeps the design, display and the main camera of its predecessor. What it gets is a new chipset and the new Lightning port. Oh, and there's an HD FaceTime front cam but that's barely worth mentioning.

Overall, it's the same tablet as the one released in March, with the class-leading Retina display and a welcome boost to the processing power. Plus, the Lightning port ensures seamless compatibility with the iPhone 5, which has sold by the millions.

9.7" LED-backlit IPS LCD touchscreen, 2048 x 1536 pixels; scratch-resistant, oleophobic coatingWi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n connectivity, carrier-dependent hotspot supportOptional LTE connectivity (data only)Optional GPS with A-GPS and GLONASS support (for the 3G model only)Apple A6X SoC with 1 GHz dual-core processorPowerVR SGX554MP4 quad-core GPU1GB of RAMiOS 6.0 with iCloud support and activation16/32/64GB of inbuilt storage652 grams of weight (662 grams for the LTE version)Bluetooth 4.0Lightning USB port11,560 mAh batteryAccelerometer, compass and three-axis gyro-sensor5MP auto-focus camera1080p video recording at 30fps1.2MP secondary camera capable of FaceTime HD callsFour and five-finger gestures1080p TV-output with the Apple Digital AV Adapter (purchased separately for $39), 720p video streamingSupports magnetic casesiTunes still required for uploading most of the contentReflective screen struggles outdoorsNo standard USB portNo stereo speakersNo GPS receiver in the Wi-Fi versionNo memory card slotLack of basic iOS apps - weather, stocks, clock, calculator, voice memos

It's an Apple device so things like a file manager and a memory card slot are not even up for discussion. They'll probably never be. Nothing on the list above should come as a surprise and, if you are still with us, you are OK with most of it.

The A6X chipset potentially doubles the processing power but let's be honest, the real life gain is not enough to make anyone throw away a still fresh iPad 3. Yet that's what Apple just did - you can think of that as investing in the future-proofing of the device more than anything else.

iPad 4 over iPad 3

Whether or not Cupertino will admit to feeling the pressure from Microsoft, they knew the right thing to do is prepare. Apple could not afford to have development split between flagship devices running different hardware.

Someone had to take the hit and leaving iPad 3 users out in the cold was probably a hard decision for Apple. The new product launch schedule may've put the iPad 4's market prospects in question too - users are less certain whether they should commit to a new device that may soon become outdated. Apparently, the new Apple tablets are doing great, but the iPad 4 seems to be the one that's always in stock, while the mini takes about 2 weeks to deliver.

But the iPad mini already had its moment in the spotlight here, it's now iPad 4's turn to have our full attention. Before we get busy, we should note that numbers are the short and easy way to set the different generations of Apple tablets apart. What was until recently known as the New iPad (iPad 3) is now discontinued. The current model (iPad 4) is officially called iPad with Retina. The only older generation Apple tablet officially in circulation is the iPad 2. Quite a mess, indeed.

Anyway, that should be enough introduction already. Let's take a closer look at the iPad 4 hardware. Join us right after the break.

HTC DROID DNA preview: First look

GSMArena team, 13 November 2012.

HTC is having a hard time competing at the highest level of the smartphone market lately, but its latest smartphone might be what was needed to turn the tables. The all-caps name of the HTC DROID DNA is, for once, well deserved as this is certainly one of the most exciting smartphones we have seen lately.

On paper the DROID DNA is the strongest candidate for the smartphone of the season title.

The defining feature of the DROID DNA is the 1080p resolution of the display - that's over double the pixels of an HD screen. This pushes the pixel density to the insane 440ppi, leaving the 326ppi Retina display in the dust.

The 5" screen of the HTC DROID DNA uses Super LCD 3 tech - the One X used the previous generation of this tech, so we expect nothing but the best. We'll be taking a closer look at it soon enough as we're at HTC and Verizon's New York event.

The rest of the phone is nothing to frown at either - it's powered by the same Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset as the Google Nexus 4, which has four Krait cores, 2GB RAM and Adreno 320 on board. It has wireless charging too.

Two crucial differences between the DNA and the Nexus (aside from the screen, of course) are the LTE connectivity, supported by the Verizon 4G network.

HTC didn't stop there - they added some of their signature features to the phone. Sure, the latest Sense UI is present, on top of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but there's also the 8MP camera with F/2.0 aperture and ImageChip (which handles the advanced camera features) and Beats Audio with their 2.55v amplifier.

The only worry is that all of this is running off a 2,020mAh battery, which is smaller than what the HTC One X+ got.

There will be a lot to test when the HTC DROID DNA gets in our lab, but we'll start with an on-site hands-on. Stay tuned - the live photos garnished with our first impressions should appear on the following pages shortly.

Samsung Galaxy Premier review: A droid of stature

GSMArena team, 12 November 2012.
Spreading the Galaxy S III magic to as many market segments as possible is what Samsung is actively trying to achieve these days. After the power users were treated to the Note II and those looking for a premium experience in a compact shell got the mini, it's now time for the mid-range market to get some attention.
Samsung Galaxy Premier I9260
Samsung Galaxy Premier official photos
The Samsung Galaxy Premier specs sheet is familiar with the 4.65-inch Super AMOLED touchscreen and the dual-core TI OMAP chipset immediately bringing the Galaxy Nexus to mind. However, calling the Premier a Nexus refresh is wildly inaccurate - the Nature UX adds so much character that you'll hardly be able to tell there's so much in common between the two smartphones.
Let's take a look at what the Galaxy Premier is all about.
Quad-band GSM and quad-band 3G support 21 Mbps HSDPA and 5.76 Mbps HSUPA support 4.65" 16M-color Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen of HD (720 x 1280 pixels) resolution; Corning Gorilla Glass 2 Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean with TouchWiz launcher 1.5 GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 CPU, PowerVR SGX544 GPU, TI OMAP 4470 chipset, 1GB of RAM 8 MP wide-angle lens autofocus camera with LED flash, face, smile and blink detection 1080p HD video recording at 30fps Dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 b, g, n GPS with A-GPS connectivity; GLONASS support, Digital compass 16/32 internal storage, microSD slot Accelerometer, gyroscope and proximity sensor Standard 3.5 mm audio jack microUSB port with USB host and TV-out (1080p) support, MHL, charging Stereo Bluetooth v4.0 FM radio with RDS 1.9MP secondary video-call camera NFC support Document editor File manager comes preinstalled Extremely rich video and audio codec support Relatively large 2100 mAh battery No dedicated camera key Dual-core Cortex-A9 CPU usually belongs to a lower market segment All plastic body PenTile matrix screen of relatively low brightness
Sure, the Samsung Galaxy Premier doesn't have the most exciting specs sheet around, but it takes a formula that was already proven to work and improves on it in a number of key areas. Building on the most popular Nexus smartphone so far, the Premier addresses just about every complaints users had about it.
The mediocre camera is replaced by a more capable 8MP shooter, the chipset got a speed update and a more powerful GPU, while the uninspiring styling got spiced up with a dash of Galaxy S III. There is also an ampler battery to take care of the relatively short endurance and a microSD card slot for cheap memory expansion.
Samsung Galaxy Premier I9260 Samsung Galaxy Premier I9260 Samsung Galaxy Premier I9260
Samsung Galaxy Premier at ours
And yes, the stock Android looks are gone, but they are replaced by the Nature UX, which is not only way more functional, but also the best looking TouchWiz version so far.
Let's see if all those tweaks actually look as promised - the hardware inspection starts right after the break.

GAME BOOSTER 03 .

                             FOR BETTER GAMING.

Game Booster aims to get the most out of your system, changing the settings so it can run games better. Not all of us can afford an optimized gaming PC, and use one system for everything from surfing the internet, listening to music to playing games.

As new games often use a lot of system resources, running them smoothly requires turning other applications off. Game Booster is a neat application that will do lots of these processes at the click of a button, freeing up much needed RAM for all sorts of games: online games, shooting games or racing games, among others.

As well as improving gaming, Game Booster will also help in running any system hungry application you choose to launch. Game Booster itself uses very little processing power, and it's great being able to turn lots of processes on and off with a single click.

While we found it successful at freeing up a surprising amount of RAM, Game Booster could be improved by being able to turn off other apps people often run all the time, like iTunes. Currently there is no way to edit the list of processes to suspend.

Game Booster won't perform miracles, but will help squeeze the most out of your system and get games running more smoothly.
